Kilmarnock U13s - 23 v 43 - Ayr U13s

Kilmarnock came up against a strong Ayr side on Sunday, however showed a lot of resolve and determination to put in a brave performance.

Playing 3x 20 minute games, and also playing 15 aside rather than 13 as normal, the young Killie team took some time to adapt against an Ayr side that were full of running, put pressure on the back line and also used the ball well through their hands, attacking down both wings.

At times missed tackles, hesitancy and lack of aggression around the breakdown played into Ayrs hands, with boys hesitating or hanging back rather than competing to win, secure and set up an attacking platform.

Lack of support play also resulted in Ayr repeatedly turning defence into attack, with the breaking Kilmarnock player being turned over.

From a whirlwind start though, Kilmarnock began to find some form and the confidence in their own game play, and took the game to Ayr, scoring some fine try’s.

The first 20 mins finished 4-15, second 8-16 and the third 11-12 for a final score of 23-43.

The scorers for Kilmarnock were Matthew Penrose (x3), Finlay Grant (x2) and Thomas Dunlop (x1), with Thomas Dunlop also converting 5 from 6.

Every game is a learning opportunity, for players and coaches, and playing opposition of this quality certainly helps in the development of the team.

The boys should all be proud of their performance today, showing their resolve to not let their heads drop but instead work hard to find a way back into the game.

I don’t usually mention stand out players, however I felt our three try scorers, along with Dylan Whitsey, encouraged those around them through their own play and therefore deserve extra mention.

We did have a couple of injuries today, however I’m pleased to say that all are ok.
