Kilmarnock took the high road to Loch Lomond on Sunday, for a long overdue game of rugby, and certainly enjoyed themselves out on the park.
Playing 3x 15 minute games, Kilmarnock outscored their opponents by 8 tries to 3, with tries for Matthew Penrose (x2), Kenzie Neilson, Alex Kirkpatrick, Thomas Dunlop, Sami Duran, Daniel Christie, and Andrew Bruce….good to see so many of our players getting on the scoresheet.
All 8 tries were also converted, with Thomas Dunlop kicking 7/7 and Lawrie Moir 1/1.
Loch Lomond were no pushover, and the young Killie side were made to work for each of their scores, as well as defend rigorously at times within their own 22 metres line…however discipline, good tackling and teamwork kept the opposition at bay.
The try of the game however goes to our hosts, who following a sublime break by their main playmaker, managed to offload his pass after being tackled to his team mate on the wing, who cut a fine angle through the Kilmarnock defence to score in the corner…a try out of the top drawer!
Kilmarnock had further opportunities to extend their lead throughout the game, with good breaks from a few of our players. Whilst we encourage all our players to attack the space and break through the defensive line, we do have a tendency to overrun with the ball, instead of passing to a supporting player running a good supporting line in space. This is part of the learning curve these young players are on, and I am sure they will learn from this and adapt in our next game.
I would also like to say well done to Taylor Houston, who played his first game of rugby for the club.
A huge thank you to Loch Lomond for their hospitality, and we look forward to playing them again next year in the conference.
