It was top v bottom at a sun drenched Bellsland on Saturday where Greenock Wanderers were the visitors.
Killie were riding a wave of confidence following a resounding 48-0 win in the BT Shield at Clydebank last weekend. However, it was the team from the Tail O' The Bank quickest out of the traps, racing to a 14-0 lead.
Not be be outdone, Killie stuck to their plan and pulled back a try score by Ruaridh Cuthbertson, successfully converted. The play shifted back to the visitors for the next quarter of the game, the half ending 19-7 to Greenock.
Only the team will know coach Stuart Pratts half time team talk. But it certainly worked. Killie went from strength to strength - attacking at pace down the wings, and defending resolutely without the ball. Soon after the break, Killie pulled the score back with a converted try scored by Sam Diamond. Greenock again extended their lead, however the balance of power had undoubtedly shifted to the home team.
A try from number 8 Ross Murray was quickly followed by a penalty, coolly slotted home by club captain Ally McWhirter. From this point on the home side were in the ascendancy. The home crowd may have wondered if it was too little too later. But alas no. A sweeping Killie attack found Jamie Shedden who ran clear from the 22 to score under the posts with 6 minutes left on the clock.
A brief recovery followed from Greenock as they contemplated the loss of a large Half Time lead. But Killie were not to be denied a remarkable draw, defending out the last few minutes.
After the game Coach Pratt was asked what the difference was in the second half. He shot back a simple reply "fitness". When asked about the strategy of bringing through players from the u-18 ranks. The response was "it would be easy to panic and call on old heads to steady things, but we are committed to developing our young talent."
On this show Killie are headed in the right direction. The result sent the decent home crowd home happy.
