The last game of the season for the Polar Bears proved out to be one of the best with Kilmarnock running out 14-12 winners in a close fought game at Cumbernauld.
The conditions were more December than late April which meant heavy ground underfoot and a greasy ball which led to more than one mistake during the game. The first half hour was played in midfield with neither side looking close to a breakthrough, until, after a ruck on their own 10 metres line, Conor Turnbull set the back line in motion with quick ball out the back line through Sean Mcguire and Graham McCue to Ross Anderson making his debut at outside centre. Ross turned on the afterburners and taking full advantage of the space ran through to score near the posts. Sean McGuire added the extra points. 7-0 for the Polar Bears.
The game carried on as before with every ruck and maul contested hard by both sides and it was from a ruck again that Kilmarnock scored their second try with good work by the forwards followed by good handling by the back line allowed Ross Anderson to break through again to score with the extra points added by Sean McGuire. 14-0 Polar Bears and that was the end of the scoring in the first half.
The second half started the same as the first with everything being contested in a hard but fair game although as time wore on Cumbernauld began to spend more time in the Kilmarnock half and only good defence, in particular from full back Ian Halbert prevented a break through. On the occasions that Kilmarnock ventured forward, handling errors and some poor decision making ensured the ball soon ended up back in Cumbernauld hands.
With 10 minutes left on the clock the pressure told and a Cumbernauld forward drive led to a close range try for their pack, the conversion was duly slotted and brought the score back to 14-7.
From the restart Kilmarnock went onto the attack but despite getting in good positions were unable to breach the home try line and Cumbernauld proved dangerous on the counter with some desperate defending by the Kilmarnock backs keeping them out.
As the clock ran down a good drive by the Cumbernauld forwards set up their second try with their winger squeezing in at the corner on the left touchline. The conversion was narrowly missed leaving the score at 14-12 for Kilmarnock with two minutes to go.
From the restart Kilmarnock drove forward but indiscipline near the Cumbernauld line led to a penalty for the home side. The referee indicated last play and the Cumbernauld attack was stopped on the Kilmarnock ten metre line where the Kilmarnock pack managed to turn the ball over and scrum half Turnbull gratefully kicked the ball dead.
A hard fought match fought by well-matched teams and played in a good spirit. Thanks to Cumbernauld for the game and the hospitality afterwards, A good way to end the season.
