On a rare hot and sunny day in Cumnock, the Polar Bears arrived to play the reverse fixture against Cumnock 2nds.
After the opening period where both teams made a number of unsuccessful attacks, Kilmarnock seized the initiative after 10 minutes with a good drive by the forwards and good second phase ball lead to Sean ‘Pony’ McGuire scoring his first try of the game, he converted this himself.
With 14 minutes on the clock, scrum half Ivor Frater passed to McGuire and after the initial break was made, took the return pass, and went through the gap to score between the posts. McGuire converted. Four minutes later the Kilmarnock dominance was emphasised when good driving play by the pack led to a close range try for back row Barry McKay to rumble over. McGuire again converted.
Cumnock rallied and there was no further scoring until with 2 minutes to half time Callum Ridout scored in the corner, the conversion attempt only succeeded in taking the heads of a few daffodils!!
Straight from the restart Kilmarnock quickly recycled the ball and after the forward drive set up the platform, slick handling in the midfield allowed Calum Reid to break through the defence and score between the posts. A successful conversion by McGuire brought the half to a close. 33-0 Kilmarnock.
The second half started in much the same manner as the first with Kilmarnock attacks being foiled by some brave and sometimes desperate defence. McGuire was first to score with his own second try which he converted himself.
Cumnock came back strongly and were awarded for their spirit when David Dunseath crashed over from short range, Stephen Taylor added the extra points.
The Polar Bears responded to this, the first try scored against them in 4 matches, in fine style and shortly after Callum Ridout added a second try with a fine run, McGuire again converted.
The heat was beginning to take its toll on both teams and mistakes became more frequent and play more broken. In the midst of this after a break by Barry McKay off the back of a ruck, good support on his inside shoulder by Calum Reid led to a breakthrough and a second try for Reid, conversion made by McGuire.
The final score of the game was made again by Reid, completing his hat trick, much to the disgust of winger McDaid who was in good position to support!! McGuire again converted.
Good effort in the heat and well done to the Polar Bears who volunteered to play for Cumnock and the Polar Bear who refereed (Tam Stewart) as Cumnock were unable to find one. Over 200 points scored by the Polar Bears in the past 4 games with only 10 points against.
Man of the Match Award has to be shared between two players, Callum Reid for his hat trick and general midfield play and Sean McGuire for his haul of 26 points .
