Gordon is the forwards coach for the first XV and has recently helped them win the RBS West Regional Shield. Kilmarnock beat GHK, 20-16, on Saturday 25 February taking them into the national semi-finals where they will play Dunfermline on Saturday 31 March.

Gordon has also played a huge part in building relationships with Carrick Academy, where he works, and Carrick Rugby Club.

He oversees around 140 youngsters at the school with teams at every age group. His under-18 side also reached the national Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Plate final on Wednesday 22 February, the first national boys final the school has been in. The team lost 33-22 to Earlston High School.

He said: “I’m absolutely shocked; to be deemed worthy of this award is very humbling.

“I love seeing all the players I coach progress as they learn and become more and more enthusiastic about rugby; it’s amazing how much time everyone gives up to help the development of the sport.

“If you told me rugby was how it is in the school nine years ago I would never have believed you. Reaching a national final at Murrayfield was a very proud moment, but for me the greatest achievement is when you walk down the high street in Maybole and you see boys and girls in their rugby gear throwing a ball about, rather than in a football strip, it’s amazing.

“We have brought rugby to the community!”
